Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features colorful birds. The title of this piece is Hundred Birds Worshipping The Phoenix, from a Chinese classic. The birds are painted in a lot of different colors and have details. The phoenix is sitting on a tree branch at the center of the piece. This piece is titled and signed with a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
